Expect lion dancing, dragons, lights and music later this month, as Erewash Museum celebrates the Chinese New Year in style.
2020 is the ‘Year of the Rat’ and to mark the occasion the museum will be holding a rat-themed lantern making workshop on Saturday 25th January, (1.15-5.15pm) with a nominal charge of £1.60 per person to cover costs.
In the build up to Chinese New Year and the procession, traditional Chinese artist Ling Peng will deliver cultural workshops at Dovedale Primary School, Parklands Infant and Nursery School and Mapperley C of E Primary School.
Ling will teach pupils the history of this significant festival and why it is celebrated all around the globe.
A spectacular lantern procession will then mark the finale of the Erewash Festival of Light, making its way from the museum at 5.30pm on 25th January to Ilkeston Market Place.
Pupils from local schools, led by the Nottingham Seven Star Lion Dance, will be taking part in the parade which will culminate in a lively session of dancing, sounds and tales.
Ann Levett of Avago Crafts has created a colourful rat lantern which will go on tour to visit each of the schools involved and then head up the procession.
