Staveley 1s

Staveley 1s vs Newark

Result: 4-2 (lost)

A good Staveley side travelled away to Newark on a dry Saturday! After a swift warm up the whistle blew and both teams started quick out the blocks.

Newark passed the ball with precision and cut through Staveley but it didn’t get through the tight Staveley defence!

Newark were awarded several short corners which Staveley’s defence dealt with really well.

Good ball pace from the back from Holly gave the defence a break and a drive into Staveley’s half soon came to an end.

Another short corner and it turns into a goal. 1-0 down. This lifted the Staveley ladies slightly and they started letting the ball do the work. Passing it nicely and gaining some good possession.

25 minutes played and Ella won a long corner from a great drive down the right side. Ruth worked hard and got a reverse stick shot away which hit the back board! Unbelievable goal!

Newark didn’t stop driving forward and the Staveley defence worked hard but unfortunately the opposition put another one in the back of the net. Half time came, 2-1.

The second half started quickly and again Newark came out fighting. Advantage given for a tackle and a drive into the Staveley ‘D’ saw a player fall over and appeal for a flick.

After a long discussion the player and umpire gave the flick and sent off Staveley’s keeper for 10 minutes! On came Kelly who had never been a goalie before… facing a flick!

Newark scored a good flick in the top left corner, 3-1 was the  score.

Staveley stayed focused and determined to keep fighting. Some great hockey from Staveley passing the ball between midfield and the right side. Driving the ball up but just coming short at the end up.

Newark were given another short corner and brilliant defending and a save from Kelly saw the ball quickly returned up the right side of the pitch and then Beth stuck it in the back of the net (3-2).

Staveley worked hard to get bodies up the pitch but at the same time Newark’s defence stood firm and a great save by their keeper meant the ball was quickly back in the Staveley ‘D’.

An unfortunate ball across the goal some how crept into the far corner. 4-2 was then end score.

Once again worked their socks off. Player of the match was Kelly.

Staveley 2s

Staveley 2s vs Woodlands 1s (Sat 16th Nov 2019)

What a fantastic result against a very good Woodlands team who started the game at the top of the league.

Once again it was a game of two halves, which Staveley 2s managed to win (3-2).

Staveley 2s started the first half quickly, transferring the ball, around the pitch and driving forwards on mass.

A quick free hit to Caitlin who was given a lot of space to turn and  drive forward into the ‘D’ and, boom, she hit the back of the net.

There was excellent meeting of the ball and fantastic steals by Catherine enabling the team to continue to drive forward.

Kara and Abi worked together on the left to make some great passes down the line. More passing from Laura to Annie who ran down the line and crossed it into the ‘D’ to Caitlin who scored again.

Grace F fitted straight into the side, closing down the opposition quickly. The tireless work of Grace C, Sophie and Hollie in the central area helped Staveley to maintain pressure on Woodlands.

This pressure paid dividends and Caitlin scored a third well deserved goal to achieve her hat trick. The half time score of 3-1, was just reward for all of the hard work.

The second half saw the Woodlands team come out strong and heaped pressure on the Staveley defence.

Charlie, in goal, gave clear direction and quickly closed down any balls into the ‘D’ to ensure the opposition did not have too many chances.

The Staveley defence of Rachel, Emma, Laura and Yso managed to repel wave after wave of attack and Woodlands demonstrated why they were top of the league.

Woodlands’ pressure paid off as they managed to score a late goal which meant a nervy final few minutes for the team and the large group of Staveley supporters who had urged the team on throughout the game.

The joint players of the match went to Caitlin and Sophie. Another strong performance by an ever improving Staveley squad.

Staveley 3s

The 3s’ game was cancelled because Woodlands couldn’t field a team so Staveley get the three points and the game goes down as a 3-0 victory.
